Thank you sister for being brave enough to say what you really feel about this issue. I, too, feel that many Muslimahs judge those of us who choose not to wear hijab for lack of evidence and instead believe it is due to lack of Islamic conviction. Alhamdulilah that it is only Allah swt's judgment that counts in the end.

many people today who argue against hijab say that the verses in surat an-nur and surat ar-rum are not clealry saying to wear the hijab and give explanations like the one you gave. but almost all people agree that the people living in the time of the prophet pbuh were the ones who understood arabic in its purest form. and no group of people understood the quran as clearly as they did. knowing this we read the many hadiths that explain what happened when these versus were revealed... and that is that all the muslim women at that time covered their heads immediately with their garments... not because of modesty or any other reason.. the only reason being it was a command from Allah.. the same reason we dont eat pork.. its not because its dirty, etc etc.. its simply because that is what Allah told us to do...salams

Dear Anonymous (the one that posted on 1/21):

I am the woman who submitted this recording. I read your comment, and I think you make a very strong argument. And I agree with almost everything you say, except one thing... we know that women covered their hair--but not their bodies--before this verse was revealed. So undoubtedly from this verse we know we are supposed to cover our bodies, but who is to say that the practice of covering one's hair was not just a cultural one that was continued because that was what people did at the time?

If you learn about the Arabic language you would understand the terminology in the ayat. Women are commanded to cover their hair it is the face which there is a differenc of opinion on. People can give their own practical reasons as you said but the qur'an mentions as reasons that ye may be recognized and not be harassed etc. You do feel out of the loop at times but following what God has ordered seeking his pleasure should be at the forefront - before pleasing people.

Salaam,

I was not able to view your video, but from the commentary I think I can relate to your point of view/perspective (I was there once). Then, I started looking into the issue and found:

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: Asma bint Abu Bakr, entered upon the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) wearing thin clothes. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) turned his attention from her. He said: O Asma', when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and he pointed to her face and hands.[3] Sunnan Abu Dawud

Hope that helps some.
